What Singles’ Day is
Began as an anti-Valentine’s joke among Nanjing university students in the 1990s — 11/11, four ones for four single people — and was turned into a shopping event by Alibaba in 2009.
How the Date is Determined
The countdown uses the date recorded above. This entry uses a fixed Gregorian month and day. The observance date is kept separate from substitute employee/public-holiday days that a government may announce.
It is grouped under Shopping for browsing; that label does not change how its date is verified.
What Happens After This Occurrence
After this occurrence passes, the same evergreen page can calculate the next date from its deterministic calendar rule. See the full list of upcoming events, or use the countdown timer for a date of your own.
