Why the gap is not constant
The number of hours between two places is the difference between their UTC offsets, and it moves whenever either of them changes its clocks. Pakistan and the UK are five hours apart in winter and four in summer, not because Pakistan changed anything, but because Britain did.
That is also why “what time is it there” and “how many hours ahead are they” are different questions in the weeks around a clock change. This page answers both for today.

How do I read the comparison table?
Each row is one hour of the day. The left column is the first city, the right the second, and the highlighted row is the hour happening right now.
Can I compare more than two cities at once?
Use the meeting planner, which takes as many cities as you like and colours each one’s working hours.
Why does the second column show a different date?
Because the two cities are on different calendar days for part of every twenty-four hours once the gap is large enough.
Why is the difference not a whole number of hours?
One of the two places keeps a half-hour or quarter-hour offset. India, Iran, Nepal, Newfoundland and parts of Australia all do.
How many hours ahead is London of New York?
Usually five, but four for about two weeks in March and one in early November, when the two do not change their clocks on the same weekend.
Does the difference change during the year?
Whenever either place starts or ends daylight saving. If both do it on the same dates, the gap holds; if only one does, it moves by an hour twice a year.
Which pairs of cities have a gap that never changes?
Any two that both stay on one offset all year — Karachi and Dubai, or Tokyo and Singapore, for example.
What is the largest possible difference between two cities?
Twenty-six hours, between UTC−12 and UTC+14. Both are in the Pacific and geographically close together.
How do I work out someone’s working hours from this?
Find their 9 to 17 block in the table and read across to your own column. Anything outside your own 9 to 17 is the compromise you are asking for.
Is midday in one column always midday in the other?
Only if the two cities share an offset. Otherwise noon in one is whatever the table says in the other.

Why do some sources say a different number of hours?
They are usually quoting the standard-time gap rather than today’s. This page always calculates from the current rules.
