Converting a time

Set the date and time in the first city, choose a second, and read the answer. The converter uses the real rules for both zones on that date, so a conversion for a day in July and the same conversion in December can differ by an hour — correctly.

Where conversions go wrong

Most conversion mistakes come from three places, and all three are avoidable.

  • Assuming the gap is fixed. London to New York is usually five hours, but for about two weeks in March and one in early November it is four. Convert the actual date, not the usual gap.
  • Reading am and pm from a 24-hour source. If a schedule says 19:00, converting the “7” instead of the 19 puts the meeting twelve hours out.
  • Forgetting the date can move. 9am Monday in Los Angeles is 2am Tuesday in Karachi. The converter shows the resulting date as well as the time for exactly this reason.

When to use something else

Does the converter handle daylight saving automatically?

Yes, for both places and for the exact date you enter, including dates in past and future years.

Can I convert to or from UTC?

Yes. Type UTC or GMT into either field and it will be offered alongside the cities.

Why did the converted date come out a day later?

Once two places are far enough apart, part of every day falls on a different calendar date. The converter shows the resulting date for exactly this reason.

Can I convert a time in the past?

Yes. Historic conversions use the rules that were in force on that date, so a meeting recorded last winter converts correctly even if the offset has changed since.

How do I convert an all-day event?

All-day entries have no time zone at all — they are a date, not a moment. Convert the specific start time instead, or leave them as they are.

What time should I put in an invitation?

The time in your own zone plus the zone name, or a UTC time. “14:00 UTC” is unambiguous everywhere; “2pm” is not.

Why is my flight arrival earlier than departure?

Because arrival times are printed in local time at the destination. Crossing several zones westward can land you before you left by the clock, though not in reality.

Does it work for military time zones?

Zulu time is UTC, so convert to or from UTC and you have it.

Can I convert between two cities in the same country?

Yes, and it matters in countries with more than one zone — Sydney to Perth, or Chicago to Phoenix, are real conversions.

What happens on the night the clocks change?

One hour is repeated or skipped. Conversions during that hour follow the rule in the time zone database, which is why entering the date rather than assuming a gap is important.

Is there a limit on how far ahead I can convert?

Not in practice, but the further ahead you go the more likely a country is to change its rules before the date arrives.
