What Halloween is

Grew out of the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian eve of All Saints’ Day, and took its modern form — costumes, trick-or-treating, carved pumpkins — in North America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The carved turnip came first; the pumpkin was an American substitution.
