What Malaysia Day is

Marks the formation of Malaysia in 1963, when Malaya joined with Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. It is distinct from Merdeka Day on 31 August, which marks independence from Britain in 1957.

The two dates are both public holidays, which is why Malaysia effectively has a fortnight of national celebration each year.
