What Ethiopian New Year (Enkutatash) is

Enkutatash opens the Ethiopian year, which runs on a calendar of thirteen months and sits seven or eight years behind the Gregorian one — Ethiopia entered its third millennium in 2007.

It falls at the end of the long rains, when the highlands turn yellow with Meskel daisies, and is marked with song, bouquets and visits between houses.
