What Cinco de Mayo is

Marks the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is a regional holiday in Puebla rather than a national one in Mexico.

The larger celebration is in the United States, where it became a marker of Mexican-American heritage.
