What Singles’ Day is

Began as an anti-Valentine’s joke among Nanjing university students in the 1990s — 11/11, four ones for four single people — and was turned into a shopping event by Alibaba in 2009.

It is now the largest single day of online retail anywhere in the world, ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.
